William Kentridge
Nose Alone(Contemporary)
Description
This lithograph forms part of Kentridge’s nose series, created in parallel with his acclaimed 2010 production of the nose for the metropolitan opera. The imagery — absurd and theatrical — draws on Gogol’s 1836 satire in which a man’s nose leaves his face and climbs the ranks of russian society. Kentridge’s exploration is layered with themes of state control, selfhood, and the surreal dislocations of modern life.
"The nose is a comic object, but also deeply tragic… it’s about power and hierarchy and the strange bureaucracy of identity. - William Kentridge"
