"Working primarily in paint, assemblage and installation, Georgina Gratrix (b. 1982) has attracted international acclaim for her satirical, shrewd and playful pieces that somehow straddle opposing worlds: the serious and the trivial, the sombre and the absurd. A “comedic grotesque” aesthetic of bold colour, awkward and disfigured portraits, and excessively thick and fleshy paint seduce the viewer into contemplating the more unsettling themes and mood beneath the surface. As the artist explains: “A multitude of things can be hidden behind a wry smile.” Her deprecating humour tackles subjects and genres of high art tradition and consumerist pop-culture alike, and also turns inward on Gratrix’s own sentiments and artistic practice: She describes her still lifes as “gushy pop songs”, her hieroglyphic imagery referencing a miscellany of cutesy-ugly-kitsch symbols, including; “vicious eyelashes and bows, puppies, too many teeth, pineapples and palm trees, lonely birds.” Gratrix has held solo shows both locally and abroad, making her international debut in the Netherlands at just 28 years old, and most recently exhibiting a solo presentation at Art Brussels 2018 (Belgium), which was awarded the Discovery Prize.
